“John Rutledge: Beyond the textbook biography of South Carolina’s first president” by Leigh Jones Handal for Post and Courier
Most folks interested in South Carolina history are familiar with the name John Rutledge. He is memorialized through one of Charleston’s principal downtown streets, Rutledge Avenue. In addition, the John Rutledge House Inn operates out of the Georgian residence he built around 1763 at 116 Broad St.
John Rutledge File Rutledge’s textbook biography would include serving as a delegate to the 1765 Stamp Act Congress, both Continental Congresses, the state’s first president (i.e. non-British governor) during the American Revolution, a delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention and one of the first U.S. Supreme Court justices — just a few of the many public roles he played during his distinguished career.
